NES Game Review: Tecmo Bowl

The legend of Tecmo started on the NES with Tecmo Bowl.  A game that at the time kicked off a bit of a dynasty in football video gaming and hosts sort of a cult presence to this day.  The game was made in 1987.  At the time a new football game was rather foreign in the video game world.  To be fair, it just started getting off the map entirely in the video game console world anyway.  Since this was on the NES, there is no major comparison other than Tecmo Super Bowl on the NES, but that game will be reviewed at another date and time.  What does the original do overall?  Let's find out.

Positives:

1. Quick pace: You can be done with a game in about 20 minutes or there about.  It's a quick paced game and one that you will enjoy a couple games off probably before doing something else with your day.

2. NFLPA License: The players of the season are on this game.  That's because Tecmo got the NFLPA license.  Which still is confusing as to why Madden didn't for years yet Tecmo got it right away.  However it is a good addition to the game and one players will enjoy.

3. Arcade type style: The arcade style game was actually quite good overall and it was the start of a three game style that got more polished overall I felt.

Negatives:

1. No NFL License: I put this as a negative but it's mainly on the NFL not Tecmo.  The NFL probably was just dumb and didn't put it's stamp of approval and the NFLPA did to add more money to their pockets.  Therefore there were only 12 teams included on the game, but they were literally just generic city names and not the full name of the team.  Luckily this game is the only Tecmo one to have to worry about.

Overall Rating

This is a decent game overall and the game gets better in Tecmo Super Bowl and is a game I would recommend today.  Overall the gameplay is polished and smooth, and while yes the NFL didn't stamp its license on, the NFLPA did and it made for a great game to know the players.  It's a good starter game and I would rate it a 7.5 out of 10, but you knew better was in store.
